MY DARLING DELIA JACOBSON

I squeezed onto the bench among nine girls, including Delia, at lunch the next day. All of Delia’s friends seemed excited to see me.

“Oh my God! You got murdered on stage on Broadway?”

“You were in the Sugar Flakes ad?”

“You had a part in Medea!”

“Your mother was Miriam Hodge?”

She still was Miriam Hodge.

“My mom and I watch her movies on the Late Late Show on weekends a lot. My favorite is Love in the Parthenon.”

“No, no no. It’s called Love in Athens.”

“Trudy, I know what it’s called. I’ve watched it half a dozen times.”

“That’s not the title. It’s Love in Athens, and it’s Love in a Paris Post Office, and it’s Love in Brooklyn Heights. I keep a journal, and I write down every TV show and every movie I’ve ever seen. I know this.”

So, I was a popular kid at lunch, at least with these girls. I was grateful when Nate joined us. Yes, he was one of Lucky’s hooligans, but he once encouraged me when we played football in the cul-de-sac several months ago. He was kind of a good guy. He also was a very talented set designer. I was impressed by the drawings he created for the sets in Macbeth, and since many of these girls wanted parts in the school play, they were curious as well.

His plan was to design an actual forest with mist and trees and rocks. The trees would be on tiny wheels so they could be taken off stage easily. His design would even include trap doors for the witches to come in and out and large castle walls on rails that could slide off the stage.

I appreciated him showing up because otherwise, day after day, I’d sit with a group of girls jabbering away, sharing sandwiches, laughing and acting silly, and I’d be the only boy. True, on some level, I was the go-to boy for a group of girls who were struggling to figure out the male mind. “Why doesn’t he call me back?” “Why is he ignoring me?” “Frank told me he just wants to be friends.” I had some insight into these perplexing situations.

With Nate there, however, I felt the pressure fall off of me, and he could help answer their questions, too. Though I don’t think his answers were any better than mine.

As expected, Lucky would pass by and scowl. He had lunch the same period as us, and you’d think he’d do everything in his power to impress some of these popular girls. They were pretty. They were smart. Their faces brightened when he approached. Some of the girls even offered him sips from their thermoses and bites from their sandwiches. Surprisingly, the only thing Lucky wanted to do was make fun of Nate or me. “You enjoy being one of the girls, Natey Patey?”

“Shut up, Lucky. I’m showing them my sets.”

“You’re showing them your what?”

This would get a huge laugh from nearly everyone. I couldn’t understand why the girls didn’t find Lucky annoying.
